Synergy Teams up with the City of Eden

If you're like most households or businesses in the area, you probably have an old printer, TV or computer equipment, taking up needed room around the house or office, that doesn't work any longer. Youjust can't bring yourself to throw it away or you realize that you can't just throw it out with the regular trash.

Printers, copiers and other electronic waste contain dangerous toxic metals and chemicals that should not be mixed with the rain water and run into the soil of the county dump. Not to mention the capacity of the dump would be greatly increased if the electronic waste was not included.

Electronic waste is dangerous and needs to be taken care of in a different way. The City of Eden now has a simple solution. by July 1, 2006 the city's main recycling center on Mebane Bridge Road will accept electronics. These electronics will be shipped to Synergy Recycling in Mayodan which specializes in recycling these items.

Although the cost to the city will depend on the electronics recycled ($10 for TV per unit, monitors $3.50 per unit or 14.5 cent per pound for each, printers, fax machines etc are 2 cents per pound) these costs will be offset by the credit of 8 cents per pound for intact hard drives and the additional money saved from diverting this waste to the landfill.

Projections for the project are an estimated $6,500 per year. Individuals would not be charged to recycle, yet industrial users would be charged the applied rates by the city.
